How to install Starlink in Australia
A reliable installation begins with obstruction testing, then solves mounting, cable routing, weather exposure, networking and safe maintenance as one system.
Installation sequence
Confirm the service and hardware
Identify the exact Starlink model, cable, router and power equipment. Mounting interfaces and cable requirements are not interchangeable across every generation.
Scan for obstructions
Use the Starlink app at the intended dish height and position. Test more than one location before drilling, buying a mount or routing a cable.
Choose a structurally suitable mounting point
Account for wind, vibration, roof material, water flow, maintenance access and the mount manufacturer’s limits. Do not fasten only to weak cladding.
Plan the cable path
Avoid sharp bends, crushing, moving parts, exhaust heat, chafe points and exposed trip hazards. Provide a weather-managed entry and strain relief.
Install and weather-seal correctly
Follow the relevant mount, roof and sealant instructions. A neat bead of unsuitable sealant is not a substitute for an appropriate flashing or entry method.
Connect power and networking
Keep equipment ventilated and dry. Confirm electrical protection and decide whether Wi-Fi coverage requires Ethernet or an additional access point.
Commission the system
Allow updates to complete, confirm the app reports a healthy installation, then test speed, latency, obstruction events and Wi-Fi in the rooms or work areas that matter.
Inspect after severe weather and periodically
Check fasteners, sealing, cable protection, corrosion, movement and vegetation growth without entering unsafe areas.
Choosing the dish position
Clear sky beats convenient cabling
A short cable route cannot compensate for recurring obstruction. Find the viable view first, then engineer the route safely.
Higher is not automatically better
Height can clear nearby objects, but increases wind exposure, access difficulty and structural demands. Use only the height needed.
Allow for growth and seasons
Trees grow and foliage changes. A winter scan may not represent summer canopy, while newly planted vegetation may become a future obstruction.
Protect the field of view
Future sheds, solar panels, roof equipment or campsite accessories can obstruct a position that works today.

Can I install Starlink myself?
Ground-level temporary setup is straightforward for many users. Roof work, structural attachment, permanent cable entries and electrical modifications may justify or require professional assistance.
Where should the router go?
Choose a dry, ventilated location that supports the required cable route and distributes Wi-Fi effectively. A technically convenient corner may provide poor household coverage.
Can I extend or modify the Starlink cable?
Use methods explicitly compatible with the model and current specifications. Unapproved modifications can create voltage drop, water ingress, connection faults or warranty problems.
